SAN DIEGO -- New unemployment numbers released Friday showed the national unemployment dropped from 10.2 percent in October to 10 percent in November. The numbers showed 11,000 Americans lost their jobs last month, but it was an improvement over what analysts had expected.10News learned San Diego is already experiencing the first signs of an employment upswing. According to the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the local unemployment rate is higher than the national average. In October, San Diego's unemployment rate was 10.5 percent, which was lower than the state of California's unemployment rate of 12.3 percent.
Analysts said growth is not expected until at least mid-way through the new year, but that does not mean local companies are not hiring. The job outlook in San Diego is looking promising, and at ProFlowers and RedEnvelope.com, they are getting ready to hire 400 seasonal workers. While the jobs may only be seasonal, ProFlowers and Red Envelope's call center in the Golden Triangle area is hiring and will hold a ready-to-hire job fair on Dec. 5."In this economical climate, to be able to just step into a position for maybe two weeks, maybe a month, maybe even years, you know, it's an opportunity to get a foot in the door," said recruiter Jen Weinbrecht.Weinbrecht also said it is personally rewarding to know her company is out to make the holidays a little brighter for some of the 126,000 San Diegans currently unemployed."Being able to call somebody and offer them a position, whether it is short term or long term, it gives them that glimmer of hope, especially during the holiday season," said Weinbrecht. The San Diego Workforce Partnership said any type of employment opportunity is a good thing. They said even temporary positions San Diegans can fill just to generate some income is a positive for families and the San Diego area. The ProFlowers/Red Envelope job fair will take place at their headquarters in the UTC area on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Click here for more information.
