CSU System Receives Record Amount Of Applicants

POSTED: 11:41 am PST December 2, 2009
UPDATED: 5:11 pm PST December 2, 2009

San Diego State University received a record 61,632 undergraduate applications for the fall 2010 semester, a 10 percent increase from this year, it was announced Wednesday.

The spike in applications comes as the California State University System plans to reduce its enrollment by 40,000 students systemwide to overcome a $564 million state funding cut.

"It appears students applied to more campuses this year -- including SDSU," said Ethan Singer, the university's associate vice president for academic affairs. "This is critical because due to state budget cuts, we will be forced to turn away more qualified applicants than in previous years."

SDSU plans to admit 5,991 new undergraduate students in the fall 2010 semester. That's down from the 7,051 students that were admitted this year.

The 61,632 undergraduate applications for next fall is the most SDSU has ever received, topping the previous record of 61,576 applications for the fall 2008 semester.
