Under Investigation For Alleged Assault With Deadly Weapon

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers defensive back Antonio Cromartie was under investigation Monday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following an early morning altercation at a Pacific Beach nightspot, authorities reported.Click Play To Hear Witness Describe Bar Incident:
Cromartie allegedly threw a champagne bottle that hit 24-year-old San Diego resident Kamaldeep Saran on the head at Bar West on Hornblend Street about 1:15 a.m., according to police.The Pro Bowl star told investigating officers the container had merely "slipped out of his hand," SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.Saran's injuries were not serious enough to require hospital treatment, and no one was arrested, Hassen said.Cromartie and several of his Chargers teammates were at the tavern celebrating their 32-3 trouncing of the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The victory put the team atop the AFC West.A man who was with Saran at the bar told a local TV station that prior to the purported assault, his group and the professional athletes had been celebrating the team's win by buying bottles of champagne, shaking them up and spraying each other with the liquid. The festivities came to an end, the witness said, when Cromartie hit his friend with one of the bottles.A police report about the incident was expected to be forwarded to the City Attorney's Office for review Monday afternoon, Hassen said.
