SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- A 33-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of burglarizing businesses in San Marcos, authorities said.Sergio Loza was arrested Thursday afternoon for allegedly burglarizing two businesses between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Deputies were investigating whether he also stole a vehicle from a third business during the same period.
Loza was arrested following a short foot chase that began at a residence in the 3800 block of La Rosa Drive and ended in a drainage ditch, where he allegedly tried to hide from deputies.Deputies went to the residence to check on a Varrio San Marcos gang member, who lives there. The sheriff's department said that when deputies arrived Loza, he was standing in front of the house and began to walk away.He allegedly ignored a deputy's order to stop and ran southbound on Rancho Santa Fe, then westbound into the drainage ditch. At the time of his arrest, Loza was carrying a backpack containing power tools stolen from a welding business at 366 S. Pacific St., according to the sheriff's department. In a subsequent search of Loza's home, deputies allegedly found more power tools stolen from the welding business.Shoe print evidence found at the business also ties Loza to the burglary, according to the sheriff's department. He is accused of burglarizing the welding business and another business just south of it in the 1500 block of Linda Vista Drive. He may also have stolen a vehicle from Hydro-Plant Inc., located next door to the welding business on South Pacific Street, according to the sheriff's department. The stolen vehicle was recovered later Thursday morning about a mile from Loza's home.Loza was booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of burglary and grand theft.
