VISTA, Calif. -- An Escondido man who left his year-old son in a locked car with the windows rolled up in 96-degree heat while he went grocery shopping was sentenced Friday to 180 days in jail and ordered to attend a parenting class.Artemio Diaz, 33, pleaded guilty Oct. 14 to felony child endangerment. The defendant admitted endangering his son by leaving the child in the car for 25 to 35 minutes around 6 p.m. Aug. 30 in the parking lot of the Northgate supermarket on Escondido Boulevard.
A passerby called for help after seeing the child crying inside the car. Officers broke a window and rescued the baby, who was taken to a hospital and given fluids.Police found Diaz in the store and arrested him.Deputy District Attorney Judy Taschner said the Diaz case should serve as a reminder to parents not to leave their children in locked cars."This happens every summer," the prosecutor said. "Hopefully, people will think twice and not leave their children behind when they're shopping."Even though summer is over, parents shouldn't leave their children locked in cars any time, because vehicles can get much hotter inside even on 70-degree days, the prosecutor said.
