A 70-year-old woman crossing a Gaslamp street sustained a serious head injury when a sport utility vehicle struck her, police said Wednesday.

The woman was crossing southbound on E Street with the walk sign around 11 a.m. Tuesday when the vehicle made a left turn onto E Street from southbound Sixth Avenue and hit her, said San Diego police Sgt. Ramona Hastings.

The woman was hospitalized with major head trauma, she said.

The driver, a 50-year-old man, was not immediately arrested, but the SDPD traffic unit is investigating, Hastings said.
