Man Accused In South Bay Sex Assaults Arrested

POSTED: 8:07 pm PST November 9, 2009
UPDATED: 8:08 pm PST November 9, 2009

A registered sex offender was arrested Monday on suspicion of sexually assaulting two women in recent months.

In both cases, George Moreland, 46, allegedly approached the victim as she walked along a Chula Vista street and asked her to clean his house, then took her to a Rancho San Diego residence and assaulted her, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.

The first crime occurred July 7, and the second Oct. 1, Wedge said. During the second assault, Moreland allegedly threatened the victim with a knife.

In both cases, the assailant gave the women money following the assaults, then drove them to South Bay neighborhoods and dropped them off.

Police did not immediately disclose evidence that allegedly ties the suspect to the crimes. Detectives believe the suspect may have committed other similar assaults, Wedge said.

Moreland is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
