An Escondido man accused of more than two dozen armed robberies in San Diego County will make his initial court appearance Tuesday, the District Attorney's Office announced.

Joel Chacon, 32, is believed by police to be the "Sunset Bandit," responsible for nine holdups in the city of San Diego, seven in Oceanside, two in Escondido and a total of nine in San Marcos and Vista, according to prosecutors.

Authorities believe the suspect was involved in the following robberies in San Diego:

  • Aug. 9 at a Quizno's Sub Shop on Carmel Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos
  • Aug. 13 at a Panera Bread restaurant on Westview Parkway in Mira Mesa
  • Aug. 16 at an El Pollo Loco on Scripps Poway Parkway in Miramar Ranch

Police said the thief displayed a pistol tucked in his waistband during many of the robberies.

Chacon, arrested at his home last Thursday, will be arraigned at the Vista Courthouse.
