SAN DIEGO -- A man is being treated for hypothermia Monday after his small boat overturned in rough waters off the Point Loma shoreline, prompting a helicopter rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

Someone heard the man yelling for help about 8 p.m. Sunday and alerted authorities, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Jetta Disco. She said a 33-foot rescue boat from USCG Station San Diego and a MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter were launched to find the boater.

The Jayhawk crew plucked the man to safety and began administering treatment for severe hypothermia as he was flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Disco said. The water temperature was around 60 degrees Sunday night, said National Weather Service meteorologist Ted MacKechnie.

The man, who is in his 40s, was fishing when his boat capsized, and he spent about an hour in the water before he was rescued, the San Diego Union- Tribune reported. Coast Guard Operations Specialist 1st Class Nick Lesourd told the Union-Tribune that the man was in stable condition late Sunday.
