Imperial Beach Pier To Close For Repairs

POSTED: 8:17 am PST November 6, 2009
UPDATED: 10:31 am PST November 6, 2009

The Imperial Beach Pier will be closed for a week to replace three 60-foot-long pilings and to make other repairs to the structure, the Port of San Diego announced Friday.

The pier and adjacent beach and water will be closed from November 16-21 while the repairs are completed, according to the port.

A helicopter will be used to transport the 2,800-pound pilings.

Other repairs include replacing about 20 percent of the deck boards, repairing the steel ramp and stair structure, putting in new guardrail posts and fixing the sewer system.

The $639,860 project is being done to ensure the pier's continued safety and longevity.

The Imperial Beach Pier, which was constructed in the 1960s, was renovated and extended in 1986 and structural improvements were made again in 2006.

Over the years, the pier's steel supports and timber components began to corrode.
