SAN DIEGO -- As authorities continue to add more fence at the border and amid tightening security, those trying to cross the border appear to be resorting to more drastic measures, 10News reported.Rafael Hernandez leads the Angels of the Desert, a migrant rescue group. He told 10News many seeking to cross the border are heading to the ocean in an attempt to swim across.Hernandez said he knows many who have tried the nearly 3-mile swim from Playa de Tijuana in Tijuana to Imperial Beach. The swimmers strap on several empty water bottles to each arm with rope.
"Those making the swim know the risk, but many have been deported and are desperate to get back to their family," said Hernandez. He estimated since the beginning of the year some 80 to 100 people have attempted the tactic. He said at least five people have drowned, and he has spoken to members of grieving families."The families are heartbroken, it's a tragic situation. More people will die; I don't want that to happen," said Hernandez.According to a recent report (available at the American Civil Liberties Union San Diego Web site), migrant deaths along the border are at a record pace this year. Hernandez said he is worried this will become worse with this high-risk strategy. The topic will be one of many border issues that will be discussed Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the "Homeless in Our Community, Homeless at Our Border" event. The event is sponsored by the Center for Social Advocacy and will be held at the San Diego Women's Club (2557 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103). To RSVP, call Crystal at 619-444-5700 ext. 310.
