SAN DIEGO -- Military officials at San Diego-area Marine Corps installations reviewed their security readiness Thursday following a shooting rampage that killed at least 12 people and wounded 31 others at an Army base in Texas.

Officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying that they were "closely monitoring the tragic event at Ft. Hood," and that local base commanders "have the authority to take additional protective measures as needed."

"The commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, Col. Frank Richie, has not elected to change our current threat level but has implemented random anti-terrorism measures ... until we get more information on what threat the Ft. Hood incident may present to us," the statement continued.

"Additionally, Col. Richie also asked the MCAS Miramar provost marshal to ensure that all guards are briefed on the Ft. Hood incident to understand why additional measures may be taken."

Officials at the northern San Diego air base declined to elaborate on the anti-terrorism actions mentioned in the statement.

A Camp Pendleton spokesman, meanwhile, stated that personnel at the USMC base near Oceanside "do not discuss force-protection procedures."

"I can, however, assure you that we take appropriate precautions and set measures based upon the threat level and local environment." Lance Cpl. Michael Atchue added.

Military officials said a soldier opened fire at the sprawling Texas Army base in the early afternoon and was shot and wounded.
