Poway School District Reveals H1N1 Shot Plans

POSTED: 4:48 pm PST November 5, 2009
UPDATED: 6:06 pm PST November 5, 2009

Officials with the Poway Unified School District said they will open swine flu vaccination clinic at their schools, 10News reported.

The district is the first to announce how it plans to give vaccines to students, but some parents said the district's plan could lead to a shortage in shots.

The clinics are scheduled to being mid-November and early December, and it is great news for some parents who have been placed on a waiting list.

"We couldn't get it through our pediatrician; there are hundreds before us," one parent told 10News.

Poway Unified will offer clinics at several of its schools after school, in the early evenings and some Saturdays. Students who are in the district, along with family members six months to 18 years of age, can get the shot. The district said pregnant women are also eligible.

However, parents like Diedre Mikkelson said she fears there won't be enough vaccine to go around.

"How do they decide? Is it a first come, first serve? Are you going to have lines around the block? Is it a lottery? Are they going to pre-screen people?" said Mikkelson.

District officials would not grant 10News an interview to answer some of those questions, and the number of vaccinations the schools will get remains unknown.

In a written statement, Poway Unified School District Associate Superintendent Bill Chiment said, "We will do our level best to provide organized and coordinated clinics, but there may be bumps in the road."

A special clinic is planned in early January for those children under age 10 who require a second dose of the vaccine," district officials said.

"I just don't know how they're gonna do it fairly. How are they going to decide who gets it, who doesn't?" said Mikkelson.

District officials said they are not sure yet when it would have a schedule for its shot clinics.
