Police Pursuit Prompts School Lockdown

POSTED: 4:40 pm PST November 3, 2009
UPDATED: 4:45 pm PST November 3, 2009

A police pursuit of a stolen car ended in a Rolando neighborhood Tuesday, with the driver fleeing on foot, prompting the lockdown of an elementary school, La Mesa police said.

The suspect, who had been driving a red 1992 Acura, was described as a white man with a shaved head and facial hair, said La Mesa police Lt. David Bond.

La Mesa police tried to stop the vehicle in the 3800 block of Bilman Street at 1:37 p.m., but the driver accelerated away.

Two minutes later, the suspect drove into a cul-de-sac, got out of the car and ran, Bond said.

Nearby Rolando Park Elementary School was placed on lockdown for about 45 minutes as officers, police dogs and a San Diego County sheriff's helicopter searched the neighborhood.

No immediate arrests were made.

The car was reported stolen in San Diego in October, Bond said.
