Free H1N1 Shots For 'At-Risk' Now Available

POSTED: 6:28 pm PST November 2, 2009
UPDATED: 7:50 pm PST November 2, 2009

After receiving an additional 78,000 H1N1 vaccines last week, San Diego County is offering free vaccinations for those considered most at risk at their public health centers.

Maribel Robin stood in line Monday to get the swine flu vaccine for her children. She said she wants to make sure her kids stay healthy.

"Just to be safe, rather be safe than sorry and so they don't get it at school," said Robin.

Robin is not the only one waiting for the vaccine, and soon the vaccine will be available at county schools.

"We are working with schools to ensure clinics can have them either this week or week after," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger of the County Health Department.

County health officials said they needed to make sure there was an adequate vaccine supply in the county before they could be distributed at schools.

"We also need to make sure that the resources are there to provide the vaccine in school. People to vaccinate, space, consent forms from parents," said Sidelinger.

About 10,000 vaccines from the latest allotment went directly to county public health centers, and a large portion went to hospitals, community clinics and private doctors' offices that had not received it yet.

"I'm glad to get vaccines, so we can get help we need," said Athena Agypon, who waited in line Monday.

About 1.7 million residents are in the at-risk category, and that includes children and pregnant women.

Although there is not enough vaccine for everyone at this time, the county health department said they are anticipating more this month.
