Duck Recovering After Being Shot With Arrows

UPDATED: 5:50 pm PDT October 30, 2009

The duck shot with five arrows from a crossbow two weeks ago at Chollas Lake is recovering, 10News reported.

Four of the arrows went through the duck's head, and one just missed his jugular vein.

The arrows were removed at the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital after the duck was found by a worker at Chollas Lake. Last week, Nancy Conney, who runs the Sky Hunters rescue and rehabilitation facility in Alpine, volunteered to take care of the duck.

"He went in the pond, took a bath, walked over and got some food, sat down. He's doing just fine," Conney said.

She said the duck's condition is excellent and not much rehabilitation was needed.

"I really didn't do much; just kept an eye on him, made sure he was walking and eating," she said.

Conney calls the duck's recovery a miracle, and she hopes he can be returned to the wild shortly.

In the meantime, there are no leads about who shot the duck.

The San Diego Animal Advocates group is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The public is urged to call 619-767-2624 if they have any information.
