Woman Who Threatened To Jump, Slipped From 94 Overpass Dies

UPDATED: 4:30 pm PDT October 30, 2009

Authorities confirmed Friday that a woman who slipped and fell from a freeway overpass in the East County has died.

The 29-year-old climbed onto a railing at the edge of the Lemon Grove Avenue bridge over State Route 94 early Wednesday afternoon after telling other pedestrians she was going to kill herself by leaping off the span, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.

The CHP closed the freeway in the area, and crisis counselors tried to talk the woman down from her perch. After about two hours, she appeared to slip, then fell onto the roadway below.

Medics took her to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, where she was later pronounced dead at about 8:30 that evening, officials said.
