SAN DIEGO -- A Camp Pendleton-based Marine died in combat Wednesday in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, bringing the total number of local Marines killed this week to five, base officials said Friday.Lance Corporal Cody R. Stanley was killed when an improvised explosive device, or IED, went off while the Marines were patrolling against enemy forces, Camp Pendleton spokesman 2nd Lt. Joshua Benson said in a prepared statement.Earlier in the weeks, base officials confirmed that four other Camp Pendleton-based Marines died in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan.
A UH-1N Huey with Cpl. Gregory M.W. Fleury, 23, and Capt. Eric Jones, 29, aboard crashed into an AH-1 Cobra carrying Capt. David Mitchell, 30, and Capt. Kyle Van De Giesen, 29, early Monday morning, said Sgt. Sean McGinty, a spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.Fleury, Jones and Van De Giesen were assigned to the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd MAW, I Marine Expeditionary Force.Mitchell was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd MAW, I Marine Expeditionary Force.None of the Marines grew up locally, but a local family was grieving the loss of their son this week in another helicopter crash in western Afghanistan.Army Sgt. 1st Class David E. Metzger, 32, of San Diego died Monday when the MH-47 helicopter he was on crashed in Darreh-ye Bum. He was among seven soldiers aboard the copter. Three U.S. Drug Enforcement agents aboard the copter also died, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.Metzger graduated from Mar Vista High School in 1995. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.
