Poway Man Convicted For Fatal DUI Crash

UPDATED: 6:57 pm PDT October 29, 2009

A Poway man was convicted Thursday of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for causing a crash near University Town Center that killed a woman and injured her aunt and mother.

It was the third trial for John Michael Sedej, 47, whose previous two trials ended with deadlocked juries.

The father of two -- who was taken into custody after the verdict was read -- faces up to 12 years in prison when sentenced Dec. 2 by Judge Melinda Lasater.

In addition to gross vehicular manslaughter, Sedej was convicted of DUI causing injury and driving with a measurable blood-alcohol level causing injury.

Jurors found true an allegation that Sedej drove with a blood-alcohol level of .15 percent or higher.

The jury determined that Sedej caused the July 13, 2007, crash at La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue that took the life of 28-year-old Nancy Galeana-Ramirez, who was riding in an SUV.

Ramirez's aunt, Patricia Ramirez, was driving the 2000 Ford Expedition. She was injured in the 1:20 a.m. accident, as was the victim's mother, Maria Ramirez.

Authorities said Sedej ran a red light in his Acura SUV and was speeding when his car collided with the Expedition carrying the three women.
