SAN DIEGO -- A man pointed a rifle at a detective during a narcotics-related search in Normal Heights, drawing several rounds, but no one was hurt and the gunman surrendered, San Diego police said Wednesday.

In addition to the probe into the gunman's actions, the incident was being investigated as an officer-involved shooting, said Lt. Kevin Rooney of the San Diego Police Homicide Unit.

The incident began at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday when a police Narcotics Team served a search warrant at a home in the 4300 block of 33rd Street, Rooney said.

Police officers and detectives announced themselves, demanded entry and then broke down a door to get into the home, Rooney said.

The first detective into the home encountered David Darcy, 31, standing in a living room doorway and pointing a rifle at him, Rooney said.

Standing about 12 feet from Darcy, the detective fired several rounds, then retreated along with other officers and called in a SWAT team, Rooney said.

During the early stages of the operation a pit bull charged an officer, police said. The dog was shot by an officer.

Darcy, who was not hit by police gunfire or injured in any other way, surrendered at 8:30 p.m., Rooney said. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and may also face narcotics-related charges, he said.

One officer injured his knee during the standoff, police said.

The detective who fired at Darcy is a seven-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, Rooney said.
