Padres Hire Red Sox Exec For GM Job

UPDATED: 3:32 pm PDT October 26, 2009

A 35-year-old assistant general manager with the Boston Red Sox was named today the eighth general manager of the San Diego Padres.

Jed Hoyer replaces Kevin Towers, who was fired as the team's manager earlier this month after 14 seasons with the Padres.

"After a thorough search and evaluation of qualified candidates, I am excited to name Jed Hoyer as our executive vice president/general manager," said Jeff Moorad, the Padres' chief executive officer. "Jed comes from a championship organization where he gained hands-on experience for a club that has had tremendous success in its baseball operations and, particularly, in player development."

Hoyer, who joined the Red Sox in 2002, said he looks forward to "working to build a consistent, winning team that the city will be proud of."

He takes the helm of the Padres after the team finished in fourth place in the National League West in 2009 with a 75-87 record.
