Man Killed In Miramar Accident Identified

Nicholas Zagunis, 22, Killed In Crash

POSTED: 4:14 am PDT October 26, 2009

Authorities Monday released the name of a young La Mesa man who died over the weekend when the pickup truck he was riding in crashed into an electrical transformer and came to rest against a building in Miramar.

Nicholas James Zagunis, 22, was a rear-seat passenger and one of three people in a 2002 Chevy Avalanche that crashed in the 7800 block of Miramar Road around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Zagunis, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the truck in the solo-vehicle crash and died at the scene, the Medical Examiner's Office reported. A woman who was driving and another male passenger were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

San Diego police Officer David Stafford said alcohol may have been involved but the woman was not immediately arrested.
