Poway Councilwoman's Husband Accused Of Threatening Neighbor

UPDATED: 7:25 pm PDT October 19, 2009

A Poway city councilwoman already facing a recall is dealing with a dispute involving one of her neighbors, 10News reported.

A neighbor who was recently involved in a lawsuit against Councilwoman Betty Rexford and the city of Poway said Rexford's husband, Paul, threatened him Sunday.

The dispute between the Rexfords, the neighbors who sued them and the city has been going on for more than a year. In a lawsuit filed by the neighbors, Betty Rexford was accused of using her authority to interfere with various home improvement projects.

On Sunday, Nathan Cannon said he was staining his fence when the Rexfords drove down their driveway. Cannon said Paul Rexford made obscene gestures at him and exchanged words. Cannon said the exchange ended with Rexford saying, "The next time I see you, I'll bring my gun."

The Rexfords spoke to 10News Monday about the incident, and Paul Rexford said he did tell Cannon that the next time they met he might have to bring his gun, but only because he said he felt threatened by Cannon.

The Rexfords told 10News that they were checking their mail when Cannon left his property and approached them in what they deemed a threatening manner -- which Cannon denied.

Cannon registered a complaint with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, and the complaint is now being investigated.

Last month, a recall was launched against Betty Rexford by Poway resident Steve Vaus. Vaus said the recall was launched after the city settled a lawsuit against the city and Rexford for nearly $500,000. The suit was brought by Cannon and another of Rexford's neighbors. Rexford has denied the charges and said she was upset she was never allowed her day in court.

Rexford told 10News she planned to hold a news conference soon to clear up what she said are lies being told about her and her husband.

10News learned that Rexford demanded a fire truck be stationed outside of her home during the 2003 Cedar fire.
