Driver Hits CHP Officer, Crashes Into Ambulance

POSTED: 4:28 am PDT October 14, 2009

A California Highway Patrol officer was being treated for an ankle injury Wednesday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver near Pala, authorities said.

The officer was struck around 9 p.m. Tuesday while doing traffic control near the scene of a two-car crash at Pala Temecula Road, according to the CHP.

The driver accused of striking the officer allegedly sped off southbound, then crashed into an ambulance that was about to take a patient from the earlier crash to a hospital.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested immediately following the second crash. The officer was taken to a hospital, a Cal Fire dispatcher said.

The CHP was investigating whether alcohol may have been a factor.
