SAN DIEGO -- About 132,000 kindergarten through 12th-grade students are enrolled in the San Diego Unified School District this year, down 814 from the previous year, it was announced Tuesday."This small decline in enrollment is the result of many factors, including the overall economic climate impacting San Diego's school population," said Bill Kowba, SDUSD's interim superintendent."As we head into another difficult budget year, maintaining our enrollment numbers will be one of our key goals," he said.
Among the 180 district-operated schools, there was an 865 student decline, while enrollment in the SDUSD's 35 charter schools increased by 151 students. For the 2008-09 school year, enrollment at SDUSD increased by 705 students. In 2006-07, it was up 294 students over the previous school year.
