SAN DIEGO -- A San Diego-based meat wholesaler has recalled some 925 pounds of ground-beef that might be contaminated with E. coli. The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday that no illnesses have been reported from the products sold by San Diego Meat Co.The recall applies to 15-pound cases of ground beef patties and 10-pound bags of bulk ground beef produced between Oct. 7 and Oct. 12 and sold to San Diego County-area caterers and restaurants.
"We're picking the product up. We've notified our customers. We'll destroy the product," San Diego Meat co-owner Bob Watkins told 10News. Watkins said it doesn't appear anyone has become ill because of the tainted beef. He and his employees picked up the product in question from 20 different restaurants and caterers around the San Diego area Tuesday.E. coli is a potentially deadly germ that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.Watkins showed 10News how the company makes sure all areas where the beef is processed are kept clean and sanitized. "Every morning, we walk through the facility, make sure everything's clean,” Watkins said.He and his business partner have owned San Diego meat company for seven years now and during that time he told 10News he's never had any problem with contamination. But he said these things just happen sometimes."That's why you test, so you can catch it as quickly as you possibly can," said Watkins.10News learned that citizens will not be able to learn which local restaurants received the possibly tainted ground beef. The San Diego Meat Co. would not say which ones, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture told 10News the company did not have to disclose that information as it is considered proprietary information.
