SAN DIEGO -- A pension plan that would have raised water rates for Southern Californians is off the table for the time being, 10News reported. The Metropolitan Water District, who provides water for 26 Southern California cities including San Diego, had proposed a 25 percent pension increase for its employees. The MWD said the increases were necessary to keep good employees. Under the pension plan, one top executive in the MWD was in line for an annual pension of almost $140,000.
A number of local officials had criticized the pension proposal, saying the plan made no sense in light of the current economic climate.Late Monday, 10News learned there was not enough support for the plan. The water district will now return to the negotiating table with its unions.
