Teen Who Survived Crash That Killed Friend Talks To 10News

Jamie Arnold Says 17-Year-Old Driver Branden Butler Was Drinking

A Torrey Pines High School student involved in a horrific crash spoke about the incident for the first time Friday, exclusively to 10News.

Jamie Arnold, 17, nearly died last Sunday in a collision that killed his close friend and sent another to Juvenile Hall. Jamie suffered a concussion, a scalp laceration that required 150 stitches, an elbow fracture and a cervical sprain that requires him to wear a neck brace.

At his home on Friday, he told 10News' Jennifer Kim what he remembers from early Sunday morning.

Jamie, a lacrosse player, said Torrey Pines won their lacrosse game against Bishop's and were feeling great Saturday night. They went to a party at a friend’s place that night, a party he describes as casual and not having more than 15 to 20 people. Jamie was heading back home and decided to get food with four of his other friends. Senior Branden Butler was at the wheel, Jamie was in the passenger seat and Alex Capozza and two others were in the back. They crashed while driving along La Granada, a dark and winding road. Jamie said he was wearing his seatbelt.

"I couldn't believe it. I heard when I woke up from the hospital. It's the worst possible scenario that could have happened," said Jamie.

It surprised Jamie when Branden, who he said "was drinking," blew a 0.10 on the breathalyzer. "He didn't seem that drunk," he said.

Jamie's mother, Laurie said, "This is every parent's nightmare. This is a wakeup call, and I know the kids are coming here changed. They are going to make a difference."

Both Jamie and his mother now wear blue wristbands with the initials "TACD" (which stands for Teens Against Careless Drivers) and "AC" (for Alex Capozza). The bracelets were made by other Torrey Pines students.

Neither Jamie nor his mother blamed Branden for anything that happened. They said this could have happened to anyone.

"I want to extend my love to him and tell him he's still my brother … that he's still all our brothers, and I love him so much," said Jamie.

Friends said Alex Capozza will be laid to rest on Monday.
