UPDATED: 3:01 pm PDT October 9, 2009

The North County Transit District received a $2 million grant through the federal economic stimulus program for alternative energy projects, it was announced Friday.

The money will be used to use to fund the installation of solar power generation technology at rail right-of-ways at maintenance and administrative facilities, according to the NCTD.

"Our proposal to invest in these technologies will decrease our utility costs and support our mission to be a greener transportation alternative for our communities," said Angela Miller, the NCTD's chief information officer.

The NCTD provides transportation to more than 12 million passengers a year on its BREEZE buses, COASTER trains and SPRINTER light rail system.
