SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego County Health Department Thursday said there is no reason to test for swine flu, despite confirmation from parents and pediatricians that the virus has invaded a local middle school.Oak Valley Middle School officials said more than 200 students traveled to Camp Cuyamaca last week, and many of them returned with flu-like symptoms. Some students were diagnosed with swine flu.Health officials said because the virus is widespread not everyone is being tested anymore. It is being considered a special case because it is a large group of students in one area.
Student McKenna Lavin has not left her house for three days. She began displaying symptoms last Saturday night -- within 24 hours of leaving Cuyamaca Outdoor School, where she spent several days with dozens of other sixth-grade students from Oak Valley Middle School.McKenna said, "I had a headache, sore throat, my stomach hurt …""For me, it's the sickest I've ever seen her," said Barbara Lavin, McKenna's mother.McKenna's pediatrician told her she likely had swine flu."He didn't test her for H1N1 because he said you treat it the same as the flu," said Lavin.10News spoke to other parents of Oak Valley students, and they said their doctors were not specifically testing for swine flu as well.Dr. Wilma Wooten with the San Diego County Health Department said the widespread nature of the virus means not everyone will be tested."We are prioritizing testing to hospitalized cases, those fatal cases," said Wooten, who also mentioned high-risk patients with underlying health problems as a testing priority. However, Oak Valley Middle School is considered a specialized case, much like a jail or nursing home would be."I'm calling this a cluster because we have a community outbreak swine flu. This case, it's a small cluster in a centralized location," said Wooten. The cluster designation has prompted an investigation by the county's health department.Even though there are no confirmed cases, Wooten said it is likely some of the children do have swine flu.On Monday, 131 students were out sick. On Wednesday, 99 students stayed home from sick due to illness.Health officials said the school is doing everything right by advising parents and telling them to keep their children at home if they are ill.As of now, health officials said there is no reason to close the school.
