Rep. Filner Endorses Newsom For Governor

UPDATED: 2:47 pm PDT October 7, 2009

Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, has endorsed San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's bid for California governor.

"Gavin shares my dedication to working to protect those most in need, including veterans and the homeless," Filner said. "He is an innovative problem-solver with a record of reform and accomplishment. We need that kind of governor in Sacramento if we're going to move California in a new direction."

Newsom is the only Democrat to formally announce his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2010 primary. However, Attorney General Jerry Brown, a former two-term governor, is widely expected to run for another term.

The Republicans running include former Rep. Tom Campbell, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former eBay Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman.
