Ex-Padre Marcus Giles Accused Of Hitting Wife

EL CAJON, Calif. -- Former San Diego Padres second baseman Marcus Giles was arrested Wednesday for allegedly battering his wife.Police were called about 3:15 a.m. to Greenfield Drive and Interstate 8 in El Cajon by a California Highway Patrol officer who had contacted Giles, 31, and his 30-year-old spouse, Tracy, outside a car that was stopped at the intersection, ECPD Lt. Fenton Sue said.The woman told officers her husband had assaulted her in the vehicle and she wanted to put him under citizen's arrest, Sue said.Police took Giles to county jail in downtown San Diego for booking on suspicion of spousal battery. He was released on bond about 8:30 a.m., a jail clerk said.The woman was not taken to a hospital, the lieutenant said.Giles, an Alpine resident and graduate of Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, spent six seasons with the Atlanta Braves before joining his older brother, Brian, on the Padres in 2007.Marcus Giles has not played in the major leagues since his release by the Padres in October of that year.Brian Giles, 38, who became a free agent Sunday at the end of the Padres' season, is being sued by a former girlfriend for about $10 million on allegations that he beat and kicked her while she was pregnant with his child, causing her to have a miscarriage. He has filed a countersuit in the case.
