Budget Cuts Force District To Transfer Teachers

Students at a Scripps Ranch elementary school are fighting to get their teacher back after she was transferred, 10News reported.

Grace Rodenbeck is a fourth-grader at Jerebeck Elementary School in Scripps Ranch. A month into the school year, she found out her teacher, Mrs. Raggus, has to be transferred to another school.

Now, Grace is going to be in a class with 36 students instead of 30.

"Sometimes when I'm writing there's a big line and I have to wait, and by the time I get to the front it's probably the end of writing," said Grace.

Budget cuts have forced the district to transfer teachers around to different schools. Jerebeck Elementary is one of 25 schools with low enrollment, and teachers were given three days notice to pack up and leave.

"Three work days, is that enough?" asked 10News' Charisse Yu.

"It's, generally speaking, enough time to get your materials together and move," said Tim Asfazadour, of the San Diego Unified School District.

"Why did the school district make these changes during the school year, not before?"

"We would like to make the changes as early as possible. We really don't know until all the students show up, and how many are going to be enrolled."

For now, Monday will be like Grace's first day of school as she will have a new classroom with new classmates and a new teacher.

Grace's former teacher, Mrs. Raggus, does not know what school or what grade she will be teaching, but her new job will begin Monday.

The school district said they will contact Mrs. Raggus to find out which school best suits her.
