Refinery Fire May Impact San Diego Gas Prices

UPDATED: 8:00 pm PDT September 25, 2009

A gasoline refinery fire in Los Angeles Friday morning may have a direct impact on what San Diegans pay at the pump, 10News reported.

The Tesoro refinery services about 300 gas stations in Southern California, including some in San Diego County. Gas experts said the prices in San Diego will go up as a result of the fire.

"Price hikes are in the pipeline and will hit this weekend," said gas analyst Charles Langley. He predicts the price will go up five cents by Monday, and about 15 cents later next week.

Jamal Jonna owns the Ultra gas station on El Cajon Boulevard, and he said the price for him to buy gas already increased by 20 cents. The increase will cost Jonna an additional $500 to buy his next load.

"I thought the lady was joking," Jonna said. "She said it was because of the fire at the refinery."

Experts said this is the time of year prices at the pump should be dropping -- which is what Langley initially predicted in San Diego for next week prior to the fire.

"If we keep seeing refineries going down or having trouble, it'll go up," he said.

Langley said Tesoro supplies gasoline to about 10 percent of San Diego's independently owned gas stations.
