Crews Contain Tecate Brush Fire

Brush Fire Sparked By Mobile Home Blaze

Despite hot, dry and windy conditions, ground and airborne crews were able to keep a brush fire in the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County in check, halting its spread at less than five acres.

A burning mobile home sparked the blaze off Humphries Road in Tecate about 9:40 a.m., according to Cal Fire.

Amid temperatures in the mid-90s and 10-12 mph winds, the flames moved through light brush and grass in the remote border-area locale, which was part of the burn area of the huge 2007 Harris Fire, said Daryll Pina, a captain with the state agency.

Ground personnel and crews aboard two air tankers and two Sheriff's Department helicopters had the spread of the blaze halted by shortly before 11 a.m., Pina said. No injuries were reported.

The fixed-wing aircraft were then sent back to their Ramona base. The choppers remained at the scene of the fire for a time as a precaution, the captain said.

The blaze appeared to have damaged or destroyed a second building in addition to the mobile home in which it erupted, Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik said.

The cause of the initial structure fire was under investigation.
