SAN DIEGO -- A local group is looking for more volunteers to help during a possible disaster, 10News reported. Two years ago during the October wildfires, Qualcomm Stadium was filled with thousands of evacuees and volunteers.Officials say those volunteers made a difference when they knew how to help, and more needs to be done in preparing volunteers to help when called upon.
While many people think they are helping by showing up to volunteer during a disaster, officials say that may sometimes do more harm than good. Those people are known as SUVs, or Spontaneous Unaffiliated Volunteers."The first responders are focused on getting their job done. So sometimes they get in the way of first responders. They also can take away resources from the victims who need the first responders to get to them," said Sue Carter of Volunteer San Diego. At Volunteer San Diego, they have already prepared a comprehensive database of volunteers in San Diego County. However, the group said they are always in need of more people."The city, the county, they don't have necessarily have the resources that the community can also do to provide for themselves," said volunteer Ned Collins.Special training is necessary, especially in cases such as the evacuees gathering at Qualcomm Stadium during the 2007 October wildfires and caring for many of the evacuees' animals."We're working with animal services in advance, and we know those who are needed are getting to the organizations who need them," said Carter. The volunteers and workers at Volunteer San Diego are on alert, and they say they are ready to mobilize hundreds or thousands of volunteers to make sure the community is well taken care of.
