ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- A local senior citizen claimed that she was duped by an Escondido auto dealership, 10News reported.Since her husband passed away, Rita Courtney has been in charge of everything. She thought bringing her car to the same place her husband did would be the best option when her windshield wiper broke. However, Courtney said she was ripped off.
"If my husband were alive he would have never put up with it, and I let it happen," said Courtney.Courtney took her car to Saturn of Escondido, and along with the windshield wiper repair she agreed to a 90,000-mile check up.Courtney said she was given a $600 estimate for the work, and she thought the amount was high but decided to go ahead with it."I'm a victim of a con, a fraud and I feel really bad that I was dumb enough to do it," said Courtney. She left her car at the service department for six hours, but when she returned she was shocked to see a bill for nearly $1,700. Courtney said she was charged $1,200 in labor costs, which comes out to $200 an hour."It just hurts me to think that people take advantage of women and of the elderly in our society," said Courtney.10News contacted Saturn of Escondido, and the dealership's manager, Mark Oberlies, said it was a case of a technician having a heavy accent and most likely a miscommunication."If we identify that there is a situation, we admit to it right away and resolve the situation," said Oberlies.Oberlies refunded the entire bill to Courtney.Courtney said she wants everyone to make sure to ask for a second opinion when it comes to something you're not familiar with.10News checked with the Better Business Bureau and found that Saturn of Escondido scored an F grade with them, with problems including contract disputes and customer service and repair issues.Saturn of Escondido said there has been several changes of management since the BBB's grade was given.
