SAN DIEGO -- The California Franchise Tax Board Monday began sending notices to 2,573 companies in San Diego County that did business in the state in 2007, but failed to file a state tax return for that year.Businesses contacted by the FTB will have 30 days to file their delinquent tax return or explain why one is not due. Otherwise, penalties and fees will be assessed.More than 35,000 companies that did business in California have not filed a state tax return for 2007, according to the FTB.
To determine which businesses have not filed state tax returns, the FTB annually reviews more than 5 million income records from government agencies and financial institutions and matches them against tax records. The effort resulted in the collection of about $31 million in back taxes from businesses last year, according to the FTB.
