As the economy of California has slid into recession, the construction industry has been hit particularly hard. So, an event in Chula Vista today was a welcome relief for unemployed construction workers. The Sweetwater Union High School District held a Construction Employment Expo. The district is in the midst of an ambitious project to rebuild, refurbish and renovate the 32 campuses in the district. The money to do all of that is coming from Proposition “O”, a 644 million dollar bond measure passed by voters in 2006. So far, the district has spent about 200 million of it on 9 different projects. The Expo didn’t begin until 10:00 this morning, but workers were already lining up by 7:30! Officials say their goal is to keep as much money as possible in the communities of the South Bay. With about 444 million dollars left to go, the good jobs created by Prop “O” should be available for years to come.
