SAN DIEGO -- About 360 San Diego County-based firefighters have been assigned to two major Southern California brush fires, a Cal Fire captain said Monday. Some of the firefighters will be sent to battle the massive Station Fire in Los Angeles County, and the others will help quell the Oak Glen III Fire in San Bernardino County, Capt, Nick Schuler said. The Station Fire, which started last Wednesday, has burned more than 85,000 acres stretching from La Canada-Flintridge and La Crescenta to Acton, according to Cal Fire.
The Oak Glen III Fire has burned about 1,000 acres near Yucaipa, Cal Fire reported.Since last week, Cal Fire has been operating at maximum staffing, with all days off canceled, Schuler said.Schuler said he didn't know if state officials would request more San Diego County firefighters."We continue to evaluate our own needs in (San Diego) County," Schuler said. He noted there's already been 220 local blazes handled by Cal Fire in 2009.About 50 of the firefighters deployed to the north belong to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, a dispatcher said. Also, two San Diego-based strike teams assigned to the state Office of Emergency Services were sent north, he said.
