UPDATED: 5:22 pm PDT August 28, 2009

The annual "Street Scene" music festival begins Friday in downtown San Diego, with nearly four dozen bands scheduled to perform on five stages over two days.

For the second year in a row, the festival is being held on the streets of the East Village, adjacent to Petco Park.

The festival began in downtown 25 years ago, but it was temporarily moved to Qualcomm Stadium to accommodate the growing crowds before returning to its roots last year.

Scheduled to perform Friday are the Black Eyed Peas, Modest Mouse, Cake, Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band, Band of Horses, Girl Talk, Devendra Banhart, Chromeo, Donald Glaude, Mastodon, Shooter Jennings, Calexico, Nortec Collective, Cage the Elephant, Trombone Shorty and Dirty Sweet.

Among those set to take the stage Saturday are M.I.A, Thievery Corporation, The Dead Weather, Silversun Pickups, Of Montreal, The Faint, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes, Bassnectar, Sharon Jones & The Dapkins, Ozomatli, Delta Spirit, West Indian Girl, LA Riots and Blue Scholars.

Doors to the all-ages event open at 4 p.m. on both days, with the shows ending at midnight. Tickets are $65 a day or $95 for a two-day pass.
