SAN DIEGO -- A former accounting manager for the USS Midway Museum pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing $111,000 from the nonprofit organization.Prosecutors said Veronica Gonzalez Monay, 35, stole the money by intercepting 21 cash deposits. She worked for the museum for three years, authorities said.In a hearing before Judge Michael Smyth, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to one count each of grand theft and fraudulent appropriations by an employee.
The defendant also admitted allegations that more than $100,000 was taken in the thefts. She faces between probation and four years in state prison when she is sentenced Sept. 24.At Gonzalez's arraignment last month, prosecutor James Teh said that when a financial officer informed the defendant of cash irregularities, she resigned two days later. An investigative audit led authorities straight to Gonzalez, Teh said.He said Gonzalez had a 1997 conviction for similar conduct which was expunged in 2004.Gonzalez, who has a degree in accounting, was employed in the same field at a different firm when she was arrested. The USS Midway Museum opened in June 2004 and features 60 exhibits with a collection of 25 restored aircraft aboard the aircraft carrier in downtown San Diego.
