Authorities Crack Down On Drinking And Driving

Law enforcement agencies across San Diego County set up sobriety checkpoints Friday night, resulting in more than 20 arrests and nearly 80 impounded vehicles, officials said Saturday.

Checkpoints were set up in the South Bay corridor, La Mesa, Chula Vista, Santee, San Marcos and Imperial Beach. The program was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to officials.

Twenty-two drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Five others were arrested on other charges, including possession of narcotics and those with outstanding warrants.

Seventy-nine vehicles, a number for driver's license violations, were impounded during the operation, which included: -- In the South Bay area, three people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and five vehicles were impounded.

-- In La Mesa, two people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, two were arrested on suspicion of narcotics possession, and 14 vehicles were impounded.

-- In Chula Vista, one person, were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in the incorporated city of Chula Vista. Nineteen vehicles were impounded.

-- In Santee, five people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, one person was arrested on non-drunken driving related charges, and nine vehicles were impounded.

-- In San Marcos, eight people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and 25 vehicles were impounded.

-- In Imperial Beach, three people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, two people were arrested for outstanding warrants, and seven vehicles were impounded.
