Two new hunters are joining the search for missing Escondido teen Amber Dubois Wednesday night: scent dogs with special training for cold cases.

10News reporter Steve Fiorina spoke with the dog handlers to find out why they think the dogs can pick up the 14-year-old's scent even though she disappeared more than six months ago.

The dogs arrived in the company of two women who are using their vacation time to help. Both the dogs and their handlers are veterans at these types of cases. The women told 10News that they've found clues on cases where the person had been missing longer than Amber Dubois has been.

» BringAmberHome.com Jack, a German shorthaired pointer, and Quincy, a yellow labrador retriever, are each trained to track an old scent but they have different specialties.

"Jack is a very air-sensitive dog," dog handler Sarah Platts said. "Quincy is detail oriented."

It's hoped that together they can shed light on the disappearance of the teen.

"As a family, we decided to try anything we can," Moe Dubois, Amber's father, said.

It's a long shot after massive ground and air searches over the past several months. When we asked about the track record in cases like this, the answer was vague: "more often than not."

Platts said, "Right now I've got eight years in, 100 cases. She's [her partner] got 15 years... [You] Don't know what you're going to get until you try it."

Jack, Quincy and their handlers will start their work at Escondido High School.

"We're just looking," Platts said. "Where she disappeared and what may have happened at that point."

They're secretive about exactly where and when they'll seach. The dogs need their space, they said.

Many scent dogs have looked for Amber but, so far, none have been successful.
