Park View Little League All-Stars

Families Seek Help Getting To Little League World Series

Donations are being sought Tuesday for the families of Chula Vista's 11- to 13-year-old All Stars, who are competing in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

The national Little League organization covered the cost of flying the boys out of town Monday but their parents had to give their credit card numbers in order to book a group travel package that has them leaving San Diego on Thursday, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A fundraising drive was launched Monday to help reduce the amount the parents' credit cards will ultimately be charged, according to the newspaper.

It costs about $4,000 to send a family of four to the series to watch the boy's compete in the preliminary round this weekend, and up to $6,000 if the team makes it all the way through the tournament, the Union-Tribune reported.

The team's goal is to raise $45,000 to cover all the boys' families through the preliminary round and $72,000 to cover everyone if Park View Little League makes it to the finals. So far, the Sycuan Tribal Council has approved a $15,000 donation and the Padres have pledged $10,000.

Park View's first Little League World Series game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday against the Great Lakes Regional champion. The game will be aired on ESPN2.

Park View is the ninth San Diego County team to reach the Little League World Series and the first since the Rancho Buena Vista All-Stars in 2005.

The only San Diego County team to win the championship was the 1961 El Cajon/La Mesa Northern Little League All-Stars, whose roster included future San Diego State and Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Sipe.

Park View qualified for the World Series on Sunday with an 11-4 victory over the Lakeside Little League All-Stars of Granite Bay in the Western Regional Final in San Bernardino, breaking a 3-3 tie with five runs in the fifth inning of the six-inning game.
