A San Diego police officer was placed on leave after she was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public while at a North County bar, 10News reported.

In a 911 recording obtained by 10News, the manager of Hennessey's Tavern in downtown Carlsbad reported a woman brandishing a weapon shortly before 10 p.m. Friday.

"I'm the manager at Hennessy's. I just had a young lady pull a gun out of her purse," the manager said in the 911 call.

The woman was later identified by authorities as 23-year-old SDPD officer Christine M. Thurston.

"She was digging into her purse … and pulled a gun out and someone saw the gun and pulled it away from her," said Carlsbad Capt. Neil Gallucci. "The report was that she was so drunk she was unaware of her surroundings."

Before officers arrived at the Roosevelt Street bar, someone had taken Thurston's gun away, and bouncers had put her outside, Carlsbad police spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said.

Carlsbad police officers responded shortly after receiving the report. After 35 minutes at the scene, Thurston was taken to the Carlsbad Police Department. She was later released to a relative.

Thurston was arrested on suspicion of public drunkenness, a misdemeanor. Diamond said there was no evidence she threatened anyone with the gun, which had been in her purse.

Monica Munoz of the San Diego Police Department said that Thurston was placed on administrative leave.

Thurston had been a patrol officer for less than a year, Munoz said.

A court hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 7, Diamond said.
