ENCINITAS, Calif. -- A young skateboarder is hospitalized Monday after he was struck by an SUV in Encinitas, a sheriff's sergeant said. The victim was traveling eastbound on Encinitas Boulevard when he entered the crosswalk at El Camino Real shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday and was hit by a northbound SUV, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Thomas Yancey. It was not immediately clear whether the skateboarder had the green light to cross El Camino Real when he entered the intersection, but before he was half-way through, the light was red, Yancey said.
The driver of the SUV could not see the skateboarder because a pickup truck in the next lane blocked the SUV driver's view, according to Yancey. The driver immediately pulled over and called for help, he said. The skateboarder was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, Yancey said. The extent of the skateboarder's injuries and his age were not immediately reported.
