Woman: Resort's $19 Room Deal Is Misleading

Rancho Bernardo Inn Offering Special $19 'Survivor' Room Package

A Pacific Beach woman's plan to relax at a local resort has her stressed out over her room fees, 10News reported.

Sarah Barnes said an advertisement for the Rancho Bernardo Inn is not what it seems.

The resort recently gained national attention for their "Survivor" package, which officers a room for $19 to anyone who wanted to camp out with no bed and no electricity.

"There's three pools, there's one spa, seven Jacuzzis, 260 acres and a championship golf course," said Melinda Speck, of the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

To Barnes, it was too good to be true. She made a three-night reservation, but was then informed about resort fees.

Barnes said her confirmation e-mail read: $19 a night, plus 12 percent tax, a $20 daily resort fee and $10 to park -- a total of about $51 a night.

"So it goes from $19 a night to $39 dollar a night, and you still have to bring your own soap and toilet paper," said Barnes

"We're not trying to hide it from anyone. When you make your reservations, we tell you at the time of reservations, 'Let me tell you what this resort fee is.' And it clearly says this is what it is, so you are not surprised when you show up," said Speck.

Barnes claimed she did not know about the resort fees until after she had given her credit card number. She canceled her stay, and now she said she feels duped.

"Bitter, obviously; disappointed," said Barnes.

"It's unfortunate that she feels that way because we really are trying to make the choices that you have fit, however it fits in to your financial need," said Speck.

Out of work since last year, Barnes said she can't afford it. She said she feels the resort fees should have been made known upfront, before she got her hopes up.

"I'm not doing this for me; I just think it's just flat unfair to everybody," said Barnes.

"We're not the only ones to do it, and we've been doing it for the duration of Rancho Bernardo Inn," said Speck.

Other guests who chose the Survivor package said the extra fees were worth it.

"We didn't have to worry about dirt; we didn't have to hike out to the bathroom. We got to have a nice, quiet time without a TV; it was great," said Carlsbad resident Suzanne Rosser.

The resort said the resort package has been so popular they've actually extended it into mid-September -- minus Labor Day -- and it's almost sold out.

Barnes said she'll take her tent up to the mountains where when she gets a bill for $19 a night there will be no added fees.

Update: Since 10News' report aired, Barnes informed reporter Jennifer Jensen that the Rancho Bernardo Inn has included a disclaimer on its Web site regarding the application of resort fees for the Survivor package.
