SAN DIEGO -- Border Patrol agents seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana from smugglers who tried to sneak the contraband through an East County freeway checkpoint over the weekend, authorities reported Monday. The first of the two traffickers drove into the Interstate 8 inspection station near Pine Valley in a Toyota Corolla shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection public affairs officials. As agents looked over the car, a service dog alerted them to its trunk, where they found a suitcase and a duffel bag filled with cannabis. The spare- tire compartment of the car also held several bundles of the drug.
The federal personnel took the 19-year-old driver into custody and confiscated the roughly 175 pounds of marijuana they'd found in his car.On Saturday, agents detained a 45-year-old man after discovering bundles of marijuana weighing a total of about 55 pounds hidden in the bumpers of the Oldsmobile Alero he'd driven into the checkpoint in the late morning, according to CBP public affairs. The hauls of cannabis and the suspects, both of them U.S. citizens, were turned over to a multi-agency anti-drug task force. The arrestees' names were not released.
