A California Highway Patrol officer traded shots with a suspected drunken driver and passenger early Sunday, but no one was hurt and no arrests have been made, authorities said.

The officer flashed his emergency lights to pull over the suspect's car around 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 8, and they came to a stop on Second Street and Madison Avenue, CHP Officer Brian Pennings said.

"Both the driver and passenger ran and a shooting ensued," Pennings said.

One of the occupants of the vehicle fired a gun, and the officer returned fire, but apparently no one was hit, according to Pennings.

He said one of the occupants got back in the vehicle and sped off, and the car was found abandoned on Highway 125 between Lemon Avenue and Spring Street.
